Roman nightlife still has a little of that portrayed in Fellini's film La Dolce Vita. Dressing up in designer wear in the evening is still a must. There is no one particulare area where the nightlife is focused but the best areas are Testaccio (mainly in summer), Trastevere, and the centro storico around the Pantheon. There are clubs to suit all tastes from grungy to upmarket and acid in between. The upmarket clubs usually have a heavy cover charge but you will get to do some celebrity spotting. Alien, Via Velletri 13 (tel 06 841 22 12). A science-fiction hot spot where they play house and techno and if you can do hip hop then this may be the place for you. They do have a dance area for the oldies of the 70s and '80s. Piper, Via Tagliamento 9 (tel 06 841 44 59). This is one of the older clubs that is somewhat chameleon playing house and underground . remember Saturday is gay night. Gilda, Via Mario de' Fiori 97, (tel 06 678 48 38) . This club near Piazza di Spagna is for an older clientele and a good place to do some celeb spotting. Jackets required. Jackie O, Via Boncompagni 11 (tel 06 42 88 54 57). This is also a restaurant and is somewhat pricey but you will find yourself rubbing shoulders with politicians and local celebrities. If you're after a more traditional Roman feel try this a short list of places. Bar del Fico, Piazza del Fico 26 (tel 06 686 52 05). Open every day until the early hours, this place is a local hang out for local actors and artists. Bar della Pace, Via della Pace 5 (tel 06 686 12 16). This bar is near Piazza Navona and has a classic wood- panelled interior. It's where the 'in' crowd go. Baronato Quattro Bellezze, Via di Panico 23 (tel 06 687 28 65). This bar is woned by a drag queen who uses the bar to perform on Thursday nights. Don't be put off as it is a very interesting and original place. |
