EATING OUT
Some of the gastronomic restaurants are considered among the best of France, while
authentic specialties can be tasted in the" winstubs", small typical wine bars of Strasbourg.
As you can expect from town that contains roots in both German and French culture, wine
and beer are popular and excellent. The best Alsace wines tend to be white and tend to be
called after one of seven vines and not the locality where they were grown. This means that
many different versions of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Tokay Gray Pinot, Sylvaner,
White Pinot and Black Pinot wines may be produced whose taste will be dictated by the soul
and sun conditions of where they were grown. Foix gras and sauerkraut are speciality dishes
of the city. Visitors are also encouraged to, try the baeckeoffe, the tarte flambée and the
spaetzle (variety of noodles) that can accompany poultries, game-meat, or even fish.
Speciality deserts include a Munster cheese, a wide variety of blueberry quetsche plum,
mirabelle or apple pies. Of course, for the visitor on the move and on a budget there is
always Mcdonalds. You can expect restaurants to feature some inexpensive tourist dishes
and children, as in most French restaurants tend to be always welcome. There is such a wide
variety and number of eating establishments in Strasbourg that you could probably eat out
every night for a year without revisiting the same place twice.
