Rome is identified with the Flavian amphitheatre, for all known as the Colosseum. This is the most famous amphitheatre in the world and among the most famous monuments. The gigantic construction follows and elliptic layout, 48 metres in height and able to hold up to 55,000 spectators as they watched gladiators and animals compete. The colosseum is constructed on four levels . At the outer edge of each circumference arches link each level. There are three tiers of arches supported by columns, Doric in the first level, Ionic in the second, and Corinthian in the third. The floor of the arena was constructed in wood below which, there was a complex set of rooms and passageways for wild beasts and other competitors that provided the shows for the spectators that crowded into the colosseum. History tells of the horrific games that took place here including the persecution of the Christians killed in bloody massacre at the hands of the lions. The film Gladiator portrayed the men competing against each other for their lives in duels to the last drop of blood. It is reported that in one of the feasts that lasted 117 days a total of nine thousand people died. |
